Persevering in Pastoral Care: Responding Beyond the Crisis

CCEF Conference Hope for the Suffering

Workshop: In this audio, Tim Lane pulls from difficult scenarios in his pastoral ministry and answers the question “How do we love people long-term when the difficulty doesn’t go away?” The church has a wonderful opportunity as the body of Christ to be an alternative family in crisis, especially when immediate family is not around. Tying together Ephesians 3 and 1 Peter 4, Lane gives a gospel incentive and a gospel imperative that frames how we persevere in pastoral care: 1.) Know the measureless love of Christ (gospel incentive Eph. 3) and 2.) Love each other deeply with that love of Christ. Keep love constant. Go the distance with each other (gospel imperative 1 Pet. 4). After starting with this foundation, Lane discusses nine very practical pastoral skills for concretely caring for others in this way, and includes phases of long term care. Key Scriptures: 1 Peter 4:7-11, Ephesians 3:14-19
