For Better and For Worse: Loving Over the Long Haul, Part 1

CCEF Conference Hope for the Suffering

Workshop: This is part 1 of a 4 part talk. Winston Smith’s target audience is anyone who cares about relationships, not necessarily just trained counselors. Starting with a marital case study, Winston discusses different approaches that helpers often turn toward to minister to a hurting person or couple: the Issue/Problem-Centered approach, the Behavior/Skill-Centered approach, and the Theological/Motivational approach. From scripture, Smith show us that while Jesus uses all these approaches, he has an even broader framework. Winston’s goal is to widen our view of what God is up to in relationships/marriage so we’re not tied down to one approach or strategy. He helps us to think broadly so we can move thoughtfully and wisely as we navigate our own relationships and as we minister to others in their relationships. Using specific scripture passages he explores the scope and focus of Jesus’ summary regarding relationships. Key Scriptures: Matthew 19:16-22; Luke 10:25-37; Matthew 22:34-40; Hebrews 8:10-12
